Hello world
About a year ago I decided to have my own website/blog.
After watching this video I decided to build a blog using ssg and its sibling rssg. ssg is a static site generator written in POSIX shell, taking posts written in Markdown and using lowdown to convert them to HTML.
This initial version was coming along until I came across Zola, another static site generator, written in Rust. I've briefly tried Hugo before but it didn't really click with me. Meanwhile when testing out Zola I felt that this could be a better tool to start building a site with. Compared to ssg, it seemed easier to customize as it already supported features such as templates and themes.
So I moved my drafts over to Zola, basically just moving files around and adding the necessary front matter. I picked the terminimal theme, as its inspiration, the terminal theme for Hugo, had caught my attention a while back.
And thus I had a first version of my site. I've added some information about me so I could use it to present myself (e.g in a resume), talked about some of my projects, and started writing blog posts.
At one point I decided to try and revamp the look of the site, using terminimal as the base. I know virtually nothing about CSS and making websites look good so a lot of tinkering was required, but I managed to get something that I'm quite pleased with. There are still some aspects that I would love to improve (especially about the spacing between elements), so more reading and trying will ensue.
Finally there were some decisions to take about the content itself. At one point I decided to ditch using tags on posts and directly separate them in categories. I've now settled on going back to using tags and not separate folders for my posts, though some of the longer ones may find themselves in the guides section.
That's it for now :) welcome to my blog and I hope you enjoy your stay.
